North South Hi – Various Artists (2000)

December 30th, 2008

North South Hi was a very limited edition CD that complied DJs, Gear Jockeys, Cut Up Artists from Melbourne.  One of these projects was The Deck Collectors that featured DJ Dexter (formerly of the Avalanches).  The highlight for me is Short’s ‘Go The Dato’.  According to the artist, he was in Canberra ACT where he came across these young teens (the legal driving age in Australia is 18) driving an unlicensed beefed up Datsun 120Y (B210).  Short happened to have his portable DAT recorder with him and interviewed and recorded them burning out the dato.  I have not come across this CD in years and upon hearing it again I felt time was ripe to share it with you all.

5 Underrated Albums of 2008

December 29th, 2008

Telsa
Silver Rockets

While everyone was surprised by Sweden bringing a sudden surge of indie activity, the real shock came from Poland’s Silver Rockets ode to Nikola Tesla, ‘Telsa’ LP.  Silver Rockets sound fell somewhere between The Tindersticks, Flaming Lips & Ennio Morricone.

Transatlantyk – Silver Rockets

Porn on Vinyl
I spent the night thinking, with short periods of sleep, interrupted by visions

As most teens search for identities to mimic and mine, Irish 17-year-old Aidan Wall records experimental lo-fi folk.  His latest effort ‘I spent the night thinking, with short periods of sleep, interrupted by visions’ has been unleashed and is slowly turning heads with his modern day ‘Pearls Before Swine’ tunes.

Set up Apparatus – Porn on Vinyl

The Black Angels
Directions to See A Ghost

Why is that their first LP ‘Passover’ was loved and this seemingly missed the accolades?

Dove – The Black Angles

Head Like A Kite
There is Loud Laughter Everywhere

Extremely well produced 2nd LP by HLAK, features the very intriguing  ‘No Ordinary Caveman’.   Featured guests from The Long Winters, Radio 4, Crooked Fingers, Smoosh, Animals at Night and touring partner Trent Moorman.

Daydream Vacation  - Head Like A Kite

Iglomat
(Self Titled)

With the advent of the Internet, you would expect to see more collaboration like Iglomat.  One based in Scotland the other in Texas, they would collaborate via stream and record the results.  The result?  Post and past every genre you could imagine.

Tornadic Activity - Iglomat

Cymbals Eat Guitars

December 23rd, 2008

Sometimes there are certain events when injustice tends to overwhelm you and bleeding obvious punching you in the face.  You hear a group and think, ‘Why isn’t this huge?’ … Cymbals Eat Guitars are a band that I can’t help but feel; the world should’ve been their oyster by now.

 Judge for yourself….
